How does VSL#3™ work?

VSL#3™ is a high-potency preparation that is greatly enriched in lactic acid bacteria, both in terms of bacterial concentrations and the number of bacterial strains. This makes this preparation different from traditional probiotics, which typically contain lower concentrations of bacterial strains.[4]

VSL#3™ contains 8 different strains of bacteria which have been specially selected to produce an optimal composition of beneficial bacteria.

The 8 special strains of VSL#3™ are:

  • Bifidobacterium breve
  • Bifidobacterium longum
  • Bifidobacterium infantis
  • Lactobacillus acidophilus
  • Lactobacillus plantarum
  • Lactobacillus paracasei
  • Lactobacillus delbrueckii subspecies bulgaricus
  • Streptococcus thermophilus

450 Billion Live Bacteria at Work

100 trillion micro-organisms of more than 500 bacterial species are thought to be present in the normal intestine (equivalent to one thousand billion bacteria per gram of colon content). Therefore, high-potency preparations, such as VSL#3™, can be expected to modify the bacterial flora in the gastrointestinal tract in terms of quantitative and qualitative composition.[13]
